ALBUM ARTWORK

Art direction, photography, and album artwork design for Mike Hicks single featuring PJ Morton, Come Go With Me. The inspiration behind the art direction is the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike; where in response to the poor working conditions, and crushing to death of a couple of black workers, a large group of workers went on strike–marching with signs declaring “I AM A MAN.” It’s a sad day when someone has to protest to publicize their personhood. This photoshoot is an artistic homage to their bravery, hope, and courage in refusing to just “go on with business as usual” amidst gross injustice and disregard for human life. The artwork is also an attempt to somehow do justice to this single that musically and lyrically is just as joyful and hopeful as it is brave and courageous.

ALBUM ARTWORK

Art direction, photography, and album artwork design for Mike Hicks EP, I Am Who We Are.

The inspiration behind the art direction is complete nostalgia. In many ways it’s a walk down memory lane in celebration of a rich history of culture, music, art, family, and community. The photoshoot leans into the feeling of reminiscing through old family photos. As the songs themselves are dedicated to his family (sounding so personal and intimate); it was only right to use his actual family photos in the artwork to capture all the feels of the music. Each single released has a family photo he is holding of the person the song was dedicated to—with an added personal touch of his fathers handwriting on each photo for the song title.
